Geumbong recreational forest where we can breathe in the fresh air and feel the clean water of a brook in a thick forest is in the spotlight as a resort place for exhausted men of the day to relieve their fatigue and for children to explore nature in a place where woods can be experienced and the value of nature can be understood.

[Details of Construction]
Geumbong recreational forest, situated in Oksan-myeon, was constructed in Uiseong-gun in 2004 with a view to providing city dwellers with a clean resting place.

It opened on October 25th, 2004 after a four-year construction period with a cost of 2.2 billion won and a training center was built with two stories above ground and a gross floor area of 473㎡ following the suggestions of users who visited the recreational forest on October 10th, 2007 for the more efficient operation of the forest. In addition, a website was organized and opened in 2009 for the convenience of tourists.

There are recreational forest centers, a training complex, a house in the forest, a log hut established in the forest, and Camping Tech(walk-in wooden campground), a campfire site, shower facilities and kitchens were established within the forest to cater for the various forest experiences. The training complex houses a seminar room, a main conference room, and a small performance hall so that you can hold any event, and a log hut made up of oak trees, Korean red pines, Yeddo spruces, Japanese white birches and others so that you can feel the touch of nature. It also has an octagonal pavilion that commands a view of the fountain and the rainbow bridge; two 64-kilometer mountain trails enclosing the recreational forest, a 7.4-kilometer Cheongseokgol walking trail and Sihwasan-gil, a short walking trail, and other facilities.

Various wild flowers, medicinal plants, and wild animals live in this recreational forest, which magnifies the importance of its preservation. Wild flowers like golden violets, densefruit pittanies, Gymnadenia cucullata (L.) Rich., and others, and medicinal plants such as Dendranthema zawadskii var. latilobum (Maxim.) Kitam., Solomon's seals, self-heals, Manchurian Dutch-manspipes and others grow here. As for wild animals, there are a total of 29 species and 109 individual birds, and a total of 12 species of mammals, according to an examination.

[Current State]
It is a place at which a variety of things are displayed in every season: you can enjoy trails with apple blossoms in the spring, hear cool streams and the chirping of insects in the summer, see trails with all sorts of autumn colors and a swarm of red dragonflies in the autumn, and watch mountains covered with snow and hares running off in alarm in the winter. The number of visitors to Geumbong recreational forest rose from 11,000 in 2010 to 14,000 in 2011.

This forest has trees that grow naturally, mono maples the sap of which is used to provide drinks for vacationers, between February and March, and the forest also holds a 23-square-meter pool, 0.7~1.0 meters in depth, to attract tourists during the summer peak season. Tourist attractions around the forest include Binggye Valley, Gounsa Temple, Sachon-ri tree-lined woods, the fossilized dinosaur footprints in Je-o-ri, and the street address is follows that of Hyuyangnim-gil, Geumbong-ro, and Migol-gil.

You may take Naman-dong IC to exit the Jungang Expressway, Yeongcheon IC to exit the Gyeongbu Expressway, and Uiseong IC to exit the Jungang Expressway to get to the recreational forest. There are two ways to get to the forest after that: cross the Bukwon intersection and go through Uiseong-eup, or cross the Yunam three-way intersection and go toward the Oksan-myeon Office. From Yeongcheon-si, you may also enter the recreational forest by turning to the right toward the three-way intersection on the main street to Juwolsa Temple after passing the Sagok-myeon Office, and turning to the right again along Geumbongji Reservoir.
